ASSISTANT MUSICAL DIRECTOR

CHRIS MUSIC

Chris first started playing music at the age of 8, learning to play piano, taught at first by his mother, then by one of her pupils. At the age of 10 he moved to the Euphonium. Chris’s first experience with brass bands came when he was just 13, when he joined the local championship section band, Billingham Silver Band on 2nd baritone. Over the next few years Chris gained Grade 8 in both Piano and Euphonium, and also Grade 5 Clarinet.

Along with Billingham Silver Band, Chris has played with the Tees Valley Youth Wind Band, Tees Valley Youth Brass Band and the Royal Signals TA (Northern) band. He has travelled around the UK, playing in such venues as York Minster and the Royal Albert Hall, and to various countries including Jersey, Finland and Gibraltar, where he later lived.

While living in Gibraltar, he took the baton of the ex-Royal Navy Band, and during that time performed many concerts including ‘Last night of the Proms’, Grease, Oliver, and he directed & produced ‘Les Miserables in concert’ in the magnificent St Michael’s Cave, a natural amphitheatre in the heart of the Rock of Gibraltar. He also became the assistant choir master of the Kings Chapel Singers and toured San Francisco and Los Angeles with the choir.

A few years ago, Chris returned to the UK with his wife Jenny, who plays cornet. They joined Thrapston Town Band, where he played Euphonium, whilst also covering percussion, tenor and bass trombone. Chris is also the accompanist for the Village Voices based in Aldwinkle.

Chris is the MD of our Academy Band, where he does stirling work with our talented and enthusiastic developing players.
He is also Assistant MD of the main band, and currently supports the trombone section.

(And yes, Christopher Music really is his name!)
