On Sunday March 3rd 2024, following our success winning the Fourth Section in 2023, the band competed once again at the Midlands Regional Finals, but in the Third Section for the first time.

The piece was titled “Corineus” – a beautifully melodic, but very technical score written by Christopher Bond.

A strong field of 16 bands took to the stage in Corby to battle it out to become Champion Band.

First was the draw, and in what is now becoming a Thrapston contesting tradition, we had a long wait for our turn to play as we were drawn to play 15th out of 16!

But the wait did not phase the band one bit. It was a confident performance, where the soloists shone, and where everybody worked incredibly hard to implement everything our talented and meticulous Musical Director, Nathan Waterman, had drilled into us over the many months of hard work leading up to this one performance.

Ahead of the results, the feedback we were receiving anecdotally was positive, but none of us dared think that we could even win.

But we did!

And so this means we get to represent the Midlands at the National Finals in Cheltenham for the second year running.

We also made history (we think!), with back-to-back wins in the Third and Fourth Sections! Looking at the data, it appears that Thrapston Town Band are the only ever Midlands-based band to win the Regional Championship 3rd Section one year after winning the Regional 4th Section Championship, which of course we achieved only last year.
Given that we only began contesting in 2020, and with a covid break thrown in there as well, to have won two regional finals, and qualify for two national finals is nothing short of incredible!
